Una Celebrazione per il Bicentenario di Percy Bysshe e Mary Shelley a Bagni di Lucca con un fine settimana baccanale di danza, poesia, acqua, musica ed amore

Salve a tutti,

quando mi è stato richiesto di raccontare le mie impressioni sull’evento di Lucca ho per un attimo esitato, pensando di “essere troppo di parte” visto il mio supporto nell’organizzazione dello stesso, ma poi mi sono detta che sarebbe stata una follia non descrivere l’evento nel dettaglio, tutto quello che abbiamo vissuto e le bellissime sensazioni provate.

Tutto è iniziato venerdì pomeriggio con una visita della Prefettura all’interno del Palazzo Ducale, situato nel centro di Lucca. La creazione di questa parte del Palazzo è stata commissionata da Elisa Baciocchi, sorella di Napoleone, che ha voluto restaurare gli affreschi della galleria delle statue. L’autorizzazione ricevuta a scattare fotografie ha permesso ai 4 fotografi ufficiali dell’evento di creare foto molto belle in uno scenario privato e magnifico.

La giornata è continuata poi all’interno del Palazzo Tucci dimora storica di Lucca dove è stato organizzato il Dance Workshop che ci permette di prendere confidenza con i passi dei balli e di entrare in sintonia con la musica e con gli altri. Sono piacevoli i momenti in cui rivedi dopo tanti mesi – a volte anche anni – alcuni amici o conoscenti ed è bello sentire l’entusiasmo crescere dentro di te per il semplice fatto di poter trascorrere con loro del tempo nei giorni successivi.

Sabato mattina ci siamo tutti dati appuntamento di fronte al Palazzo Ducale dove i partecipanti all’evento sono stati suddivisi in 4 gruppi. Come sempre il mio “bel paese” mette le persone di fronte a dura prova complicando le situazioni e facendo perdere lo sconsolato utente/cittadino nei meandri ignoti della “burocrazia” italiana. Devo dire che le difficoltà sono state notevoli, ma Margarita non ha mai mollato un attimo ed è sempre stata ferma nella sua posizione: grazie alla sua tenacia nel corso di questi anni abbiamo potuto visitare locations che normalmente sono chiuse al pubblico e anche stavolta a Lucca è andata bene.

Nel primo pomeriggio molti di noi hanno fatto un giro per le vie di Lucca, mangiato qualche buon piatto locale e sicuro degustato un buon gelato! Poi tutti pronti per il GRAND MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S BALL.

Villa Rossi di Gattaiola è una location meravigliosa e ha fatto da sfondo ad uno dei balli più belli e ben riusciti che tutti ricorderemo. Tutto perfetto, tutto ben predisposto, tutto ben organizzato per rendere unica questa serata: è davvero lo è stata: UNICA!! Il tutto è iniziato con Bastien und Bastienne, un'opera lirica di Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart recitata all’aperto. Una scelta ben azzeccata perché l’opera è semplice e leggera. La prima volta che è stata rappresentata questa opera è stato nel parco della Villa del Dott. Franz Mesmer nel 1768, 150 anni fa. Una splendida performance dei cantanti e l’orchestra e il piacere di ascoltare una bellissima musica godendoti uno scenario bellissimo.

Dopo questo momento musicale ci siamo spostati sotto la loggia dove era stato allestito un tavolo meraviglioso curato nei minimi dettagli. Il cibo veramente buono e vario per tutti i gusti e necessità. Io mi definisco una “buona forchetta”…. e quindi sono noiosa e uggiosa perché voglio sempre mangiar bene e in questi contesti è difficile riuscire ad accontentare tante persone, ma Margarita, con la scelta di Anna Bowcock di East Catering come cuoca, ci riesce sempre, con quelle attenzioni, dettagli e piccole dedizioni che rendono anche il piatto più semplice, bello ed importante.

Già in passato Margarita era riuscita a ricreare le cene di un tempo: ai corretti orari, con le giuste modalità di servizio, le pietanze presentate in un certo modo che quasi ti dispiaceva tagliarle e infilarci il cucchiaio…

insomma è corretto e giusto farsì che anche il momento a tavola sia importante e vissuto come era all’epoca proprio per immergerti ancora di più nel passato e anche stavolta è stato un gran successo!!!

Subito dopo ci siamo spostati al primo piano della Villa dove ci siamo trovati di fronte ad uno scenario unico: la sala da ballo e le sale immediatamente adiacenti erano illuminate come avveniva nel passato: a lume di candela!! Finalmente un sogno realizzato!! Inutile dire le sensazioni che credo ciascuno di noi abbia provato. Uno scenario unico e bellissimo. Per tutti coloro che amano danzare credo che sia stato un momento davvero magico, emozionante. Amelia Klavel ha aperto il ballo nel ruolo di Titania, la regina delle fate, con il suo entourage di elfi e fate interpretati da attori diretti da Claudio Spaggiari.

Le danze ed il ritmo sono scandite dalla bravura del Maestro Donald che ti guida, ti rende leggera, ti rassicura e ti fa vivere emozioni e momenti che ti seguono poi anche nei giorni successivi come i motivetti delle canzoni che mi ritrovo a cantare dappertutto!

Per coloro che come me non si dedicano a ballare tutta la sera, Margarita aveva pensato a momenti di intrattenimento come la sala dedicata ai giochi con il croupier Virgilio Contrucci, uno spettacolo teatrale allestito al laghetto e cosa più importante la mongolfiera che ha permesso a coloro che volevano salire di vivere un’altra emozione unica.

La serata è trascorsa bene, con un ritmo leggero che ci ha permesso di respirare un’atmosfera nuova, diversa, passata…di fermarci, di assaporare, di godere quel momento presente che a volte è così difficile catturare nella vita quotidiana di tutti i giorni. Insomma una serata spettacolare, unica, e forse anche irripetibile perché questa serata ce la ricorderemo, la porteremo sempre con noi e credo di esprimere il sentire di molti dicendo che sono contenta di esserci stata, di averla vissuta tutta, di essermi goduta la bellezza e l’atmosfera incantata di questo ballo di mezzanotte dove si respirava davvero tanto amore e bellezza.

Domenica invece l’evento si è spostato a Bagni di Lucca un paesino poco distante da Lucca che in passato ha accolto poeti, scrittori, regine… un paese con il suo fascino, ricco di storia e di luoghi meravigliosi come le terme. Abbiamo fatto una sosta a Borgo a Mozzano per scattare alcune foto ricordo sul Ponte del Diavolo, affascinante e misterioso. Poi una sorpresa fuori programma: l’apertura della Villa Teresa Gamba, della Contessa Guiccioli, amante di Lord Byron, dove hanno soggiornato poeti e scrittori. Ancora oggi la famiglia conserva l’arma di Byron e altri suoi oggetti personali. Il giardino all’inglese che scende giu fino al fiume Lima è rimasto come era 200 anni fa.

Una breve passeggiata e poi un gustoso pranzo al Ristorante Circolo dei Forestieri dove siamo stati intrattenuti da un grazioso spettacolo celebrativo del bicentenario di Percy Bysshe Shelley e Mary a Bagni di Lucca per l’estate. Con Mark Wallis nei panni del Dott. Victor Frankestein, Alex Eperon che interpretava Shelley e Aurora Berkestam Drysén nei panni di Claire Clairemont la sorella di Mary.

Subito dopo abbiamo fatto una passeggiata per il borgo di Bagni di Lucca visitando la Villa Webb, affittata da Byron, fino a raggiungere l’Hotel delle Terme percorrendo il ‘sentiero degli amanti”, fino a raggiungere l’Hotel delle Terme dove era stato allestito un veloce afternoon tea. Successivamente la possibilità di immergersi nelle acque termali e starci dentro la Grotta di Paolina.

La giornata si è conclusa con l’apertura di un’altra grande location che nel corso degli ultimi anni ha dato molto da fare a Margarita che si è sempre battuta con tenacia: il Casinò Reale di Bagni di Lucca con una sala da ballo meravigliosa. Ovviamente in questo contesto non poteva mancare la sala dedicata ai giochi d’azzardo con il meraviglioso croupier Virgilio che ci ha fatto tanto divertire durante la serata. È stato il suo prezioso aiuto a permette che quest’anno fosse possibile aprire il Casinò e a facilitare tutta l’organizzazione dell’evento a Bagni di Lucca.

Abbiamo potuto vivere un momento di poesia che ci ha regalato belle emozioni, di ballare in questa meravigliosa sala, di poter parlare davanti a del buon cibo sorseggiando un buon prosecco. Un’altra serata di successo all’interno del Casinò più antichi d’europa. Insomma una giornata bella piena, direi anche stancante,

ma che meritava sotto tutti i punti di vista perché anche questa era un’occasione da non perdere per vivere emozioni indimenticabili in uno scenario bellissimo.

Mentre scrivo questa recensione ripenso a questi momenti che vorrei poter rivivere più spesso, ma va bene così perché sappiamo che è bella anche l’attesa: attendere il prossimo evento, la prossima occasione per rivedere amici e conoscenti e per fare un nuovo tuffo nel passato. Nel frattempo lo facciamo con la bellezza dei nostri ricordi, ascoltando le nostre emozioni e sensazioni ed aiutandoci con le foto bellissime che i fotografi ufficiali ci hanno fatto.

Cosa dire a Margarita? BRAVA!!!!! Brava, brava e ancora brava!

Brava per il tuo coraggio, per le difficoltà affrontate con la burocrazia italiana, per essere così tenace;

Brava per la tua attenzione alle persone, ai dettagli, all’arte, alla musica che rendono i tuoi eventi unici;

Ma soprattutto GRAZIE perché questo evento è stato un successone e quello che abbiamo vissuto lo conserveremo gelosamente dentro di noi. Grazie per averci fatto ballare, divertire, sorridere, commuovere… grazie per averci reso più ricchi dentro e per averci fatto vivere emozioni uniche, uniche, uniche!

THE SUMMER PLEASURES of 1818

Celebrating the Bicentenary of Percy Bysshe and Mary Shelley in Bagni di Lucca with a Bacchanalian weekend of dance, poetry, water, music and love

Hello everyone,

When I was asked to share my impressions of the event in Lucca I hesitated for a moment, thinking of "being too biased" due to my support role in the organisation of the event, but then I told myself that it would be madness not to describe the event in detail, all the experiences we lived and the beautiful sensations felt.

It all started Friday afternoon with a visit to the Prefecture inside Palazzo Ducale in the centre of Lucca. Elisa Bacchiochi, Napoleon’s sister ordered this section of the Palazzo to be completely frescoed in the Neo-classical style the moment she took up residence as Princess of Lucca and Piombino. The fact that we were given permission to take photos meant that the 4 official photographers immediately began taking photos using the frescoed walls as backdrops!

The day continued at Palazzo Tucci, historic home of Marquis Tucci, where the Dance Workshop was held and a few guests were lodged. The Dance Run-Through allows you to become familiar with the steps of the dances and to get in tune with the music and with the other people. It’s a pleasant moment when you see again some friends or acquaintances after many months, sometimes even years, of absence and it is nice to feel the excitement build inside you for the simple anticipation of being able to spend time with them in the following days.

Saturday morning we all met in front of the Palazzo Ducale where the participants were divided into 4 groups. As always my "beautiful country" presents people with hard complicated situations and leaves the disconsolate user / citizen lost in the unknown meanders of the Italian "bureaucracy". I must say that the difficulties were many, but Margarita never gave up for a moment. She was always firm in her position and

thanks to her tenacity during these years we have been able to visit locations that are normally closed to the public and this time in Lucca it all went well.

In the early afternoon, many of us toured the streets of Lucca, ate some good local dishes and naturally, gorged on gelato! Then everyone got ready for the GRAND MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S BALL.

Villa Rossi di Gattaiola is a wonderful location and was the background to one of the most beautiful and successful Balls that we will all remember. Everything was perfect, all well prepared, all well organised to make this evening unforgettable: it really was: UNIQUE !!

It all started with Bastien und Bastienne, an opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed outdoors, in Italian. The first performance was in the summer of 1768 (150 years ago) in the park of the Villa of Dr. Franz Mesmer, a friend of the Mozart family. It was a well-chosen choice to set it once again outdoors because the opera is simple and light - a wonderful performance by the singers and orchestra and the pleasure of listening to beautiful music while enjoying beautiful scenery.

After this musical interlude we moved to beneath the loggia where a wonderful grazing table had been prepared with attention to the smallest details with good and varied food for all tastes and needs. I call myself, ‘a good fork’ .... and so I'm boring and gloomy because I always want to eat well and in these contexts it is difficult to satisfy so many people, but Margarita always succeeds, with those attentions to detail, and small intuitions that make even the most simple dish, a beautiful and an impressive thing. The cook, Anna Bowcock from East Catering, surpassed her past successes this evening!

In previous events Margarita has managed to recreate the dinners of the age: at the correct times, with the right service, the dishes presented in a certain way so that you almost regretted having to cut them and wreck them with a spoon. A small deviation in timings this time was a resoundingly popular move. These recreations aid you in immersing yourself in the past and this time the banquet was a great success!

Immediately after eating, we moved to the first floor of the Villa where we were faced with a spellbinding scenario: the ballroom and the rooms immediately adjacent were lit as in the past: by candlelight!! Finally a dream come true! It’s needless to describe the feelings that we experienced. The effect was breath-taking. For all those who love to dance I think it was a really magical, exciting moment. Amelia Klavel opened the Ball with her entrance as Titania, queen of the fairies with her entourage of elves and fairies.

The dances and the rhythms were punctuated by the skill of Maestro Donald Francis who guides you, shapes you to trip lighter on your feet, reassures you and never lets you forget the moment. Days later you will find yourself humming the airs and refrains as you sway around the house!

For those like myself who do not dedicate the entire night to dancing, Margarita had thought of moments of entertainment such as the room dedicated to games and gambling care of Virgilio Contrucci; a theatrical performance directed by Claudio Spaggiari at the small temple and at the lake in the grounds where frog-beasts emerged from the pond; and most importantly the hot-air balloon that allowed those who wanted to go up a level another thrilling sensation.

The evening swept past, with a light rhythm that allowed us to breathe an atmosphere of bygone times ... to stop, to savour, to enjoy that present moment which is sometimes so difficult to capture in everyday life. In short, a spectacular evening, unique, and perhaps even unrepeatable because we will remember this evening and always carry it with us and I believe I express the feeling of many when I say, I am happy I was there. To have lived it all, to have enjoyed the splendour and the enchantment of this midnight dance where you could really breathe love and beauty.

On Sunday, the event moved to Bagni di Lucca. A tiny spa-town not far from Lucca that in the past has welcomed poets, writers, and temporarily unemployed royalty. We stopped at Borgo a Mozzano to take some souvenir photos of the fascinating and mysterious Ponte del Diavolo. Then an unexpected surprise: the opening of the Villa of Teresa Gamba, Contessa Guiccioli where poets and writers have stayed. She was Lord

Byron’s lover when he stayed in Bagni di Lucca and her heirs still live in the Villa. They have Byron’s caliver and other personal items left behind by the poet. The English garden goes down the the Lima River which rushes past, deep and cold.

A short walk and then a tasty lunch at the Circolo dei Forestieri Restaurant where we were entertained by an amusing celebratory show of the bicentenary of Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary in Bagni di Lucca, with Mark Wallis in the role of Dr. Victor Frankenstein, Alex Eperon as Shelley and Aurora Berkestam Drysén as Claire Clairemont, Shelley’s sister-in-law and a script written by Ben Townsend.

Immediately after lunch we took a walk through the village of Bagni di Lucca visiting Villa Webb, rented by Byron and then a walk through the forest along the lover’s path to Hotel delle Terme where a quick afternoon tea was set up. Subsequently there was the possibility to immerse yourself in the thermal waters and sit in Paolina’s Grotto.

The day ended with the premiere of another great location that over the last few years has evaded Margarita’s attempts to use it. But she never lost patience or sight of her goal. The Royal Casino of Bagni di Lucca with its marvellous ballroom. Obviously in this context one could not miss the room dedicated to gambling games with the wonderfully urbane croupier Virgilio who reminded us that the game of Roulette was born on this spot. His astonishing collection of C19th gambling equipment was the star of the evening!

At the Casino we lived a moment of poetry that refreshed the emotions: to dance in this wonderful room; to be able to talk over good food while sipping prosecco. Another successful evening in the oldest casino in Europe. In short, a beautifully full day, I would also say exhausting, but deservedly so, because from all aspects, this was an opportunity not to be missed, to experience unforgettable emotions in beautiful scenery.

As I write this review I recall those moments that I would like to relive them more often, but that's okay because we know that anticipation is also beautiful. So lets wait for the next event, the next opportunity to see friends and acquaintances, and to take a new dip in the past. In the meantime we can relive the memories, remember the feelings, and recall the pleasant moments with the help of the beautiful photos that the official photographers have created.

What can I say to Margarita? BRAVA !!!!! Brava, brava and again brava!

Brava for your courage, for the difficulties faced with the Italian bureaucracy, to be so tenacious;

Brava for your attention to people, details, art, music that make your events unique;

But above all THANK YOU because this event was a hugs success and what we have experienced we will jealously keep within us. Thanks for letting us dance, have fun, smile, be moved... thanks for making us richer inside and for making us able to live unique, unique, unique emotions!
