The Sixth Malta Regency Weekend was held from April 27th till April 29th. Wine tastings at the award-winning Maltese Cellar "Emmanuel Delicata" and a regency dance workshop at the crypts of the Anglican Pro-Cathedral of Saint Paul in Valletta, kick started the events. This was followed by a dinner held at the "De Robertis" restaurant on the roof top of the Hotel de Castille from where we could admire the magnificent view over the Grand Harbour.
On Saturday morning, all participants, in regency attire, met at the Belvedere of the "Upper Barrakka Gardens" from where we promenaded along the streets of Valletta to "Casa Rocca PIccola", an ancient Maltese noble house, owned by the de Piro Family which is usually also open to the public. Nicholas 9th Baron of Budach and 9th Marchese de Piro guided a tour of the interior; followed by a short lesson on the costumes of the Baroque / Regency periods,. We then enjoyed lunch at the "La Giara" Restaurant, together with the large group of re-enactors.
That same evening, we went on a promenade and a carriage ride through the silent streets of Mdina; the former capital of Malta. A visit to the newly restored Cathedral Museum, which was opened specifically for this us. Following this we had the pleasure of dancing, to the sound of a string quartet, led by Maestro Lindsay Mallia, in the museum's pinacoteca.
The final day of the Maltese event began with a trip to the promontory of Wardija, where, in regency attire we tasted some Maltese specialities including the oil produced by the company "Sam and Matty Cremona". From there we could admire the view from the promontory, played "bocci" and then danced again in a private villa known as "Castello Bertrand" among coloured flowers, under the shade provided by pines trees. Refreshments consisting of homemade lemonade and delicacies were offered by the impeccable organization of Nicky Bianchi, Annabel Malia, Ann Petroni and all their entourage, who, every year, never fail to help us discover new corners of the Mediterranean islands making us feel not guests, but friends.
