Ungheria, 15/17 giugno 2018 - Georgian/Regency weekend
The Georgian/Regency weekend was held in the Festetics Palace and its naturalistic landscape park, in Keszthely on the shores of Lake Balaton in Hungary on Friday the 15th and Saturday the 16th of June. The ball was organised by the charming Zsuzsi Dingsdale aided by Zsuzsanna Nagy, better known as Suzy.
The programme of events started, on Friday afternoon, with a dance workshop, in period costumes, in the big ballroom, followed by some free time to stroll around or take pictures in the well-kept garden and to socialize with other fellow dancers. This was followed by a delicious dinner with wine tasting from the Balaton terroire and mouthwatering desserts. Guests were then given a guided tour of the lovely baroque palace. The palace still houses a number of original pieces, tiled stoves and inlaid floors, which is quite rare in this part of the world, where wars have taken their toll. The tour had to be interrupted so that the guests could be entertained to a son et lumiere show, since a thunder storm was brewing. It was the first time such a show was being held on the palace’s facade. Luckily, the weather held long enough and everyone could enjoy the spectacular production. Soon after the tour of the palace was resumed for all to admire the various rooms, halls and ballrooms, each in a different colour scheme full of portraits and bric-a-brac. Yet the most stunning part of the palace is the library, known for enormous collection of books and splendid carved furniture. Over one hundred thousand volumes can be found on the golden oak shelving.
Saturday morning proved to be hot and sunny; perfect for the planned horse show. The show started with a horse parade, followed by a commentary and all sorts of exercises that were once practised for wartime, during which cossacks demonstrated their equestrian skills. Demonstrations of carriage riding and side saddle riding brought the show to an end. Guests were then taken on carriage rides in the palace’s grounds. Female guests were also given the opportunity to try side-saddle riding, as was customary for women in the Victorian era and a favourite for Empress Sissy.
In the afternoon, guests were treated to a tea and a baroque concert by a string quartet, in the Venetian Mirror Room. A couple of hours later the ball started in the White Mirror Ballroom. The dancing began with the Polonaise – Grand March; Zsuzsi Dingsdale and Libby Curzon, the dance mistresses throughout the event, aptly called the dances. A musical interlude was provided by two sopranos and a pianist. This led up to the buffet dinner of traditional Hungarian food, which was served in the big ballroom and in the Venetian Mirror Room. Dancing continued after dinner, until late.

mobilio originale, stufe in maiolica e pavimenti intarsiati, cosa abbastanza
