Ballo nel Castello Friedrichsfelde, Sabato 16 novembre 2019
My friend Judith and I stayed a week in Berlin in
mid-November and, during this time, we attended a delightful ball at the
attractive Schloss Friederichsfelde which is situated in the grounds of the
huge Tierpark which is now best known for its zoo. Built in the late
Seventeenth Century, the castle is a neo-classical building, which was occupied
by various noble Prussian families until the Soviet occupation of 1945.
Recently restored, it is now a venue for concerts and events, and is a stunning
venue for a ball, particularly when the park outside is illuminated with lights
and Christmas decorations.
We attended a dance practice the evening before the ball and danced two or three of the more complex dances, and met the other dancers and our caller, Birte Hoffman Cabenda and her husband Roy, as well as several old friends. The calling was in German and we were the only foreigners present, but several people kindly translated for us, and it was quite easy to follow the instructions since dancing terms are mostly international.
On the Saturday morning, a friend had arranged for us to meet up with a small group and visit Schloss Paretz, about 90 minutes’ drive from Berlin. It was the country house of Frederick William III of Prussia and Queen Luise and so was of great interest to us. It has recently been restored and refurbished with copies of the original wallpaper and furniture, and furnished with personal items belonging to the royal couple. There are also portraits and sculptures of the royal family and views over the park where Queen Luise loved to walk. We also visited the small church where the family used to worship before we left to go back to Berlin. We had time to rest at our hotel near the Tierpark before the ball in the evening. Luckily the evening was cold but dry, so we walked the short distance to the castle. We were welcomed with a drink and instructions how to behave in the presence of ‘royalty’. The roles of Frederick and Luise were undertaken by two reenactors, and we were presented one by one to their highnesses. The talented musicians provided us with music all evening, the dances were fun and not too difficult, even for the beginners, and there was a very good buffet supper which had a wide variety of food, suitable for everybody. It was a very enjoyable evening and Birte called clearly and loudly so that all could hear, even without a microphone. There was enough time to sit and chat to other guests which was nice, and we made some new friends too.
We really enjoyed our visit to Berlin; so many museums and interesting places to visit, and we found the local people friendly and helpful. We saw a lot but left some delights for a future visit, since there are many more museums, galleries and attractions. Even one week was not enough!
